Redesign subway station Giselastraße

The Gisela Strasse subway station is one of more than 40 stations in the Munich network that is scheduled for renovation in the coming months. Based on an in-depth feasibility study, we have developed a concept that will serve as a guide for future renovations across the entire U6 line in line with the standard specifications of our overall design concept.

The guiding principle of the design is to achieve a calmer visual effect on the platform levels and to accentuate the impressive scale of the structure. We plan to first remove all unnecessary peripheral architecture, retaining the station’s distinctive features that warrant protection as mandated by the design specifications. Our new design will showcase these features and add complementary contemporary elements, for instance by removing all of the ceiling and wall cladding to expose the original concrete. After the concrete is deep cleaned and treated with a slightly tinted protective lacquer, the subway station will have a completely updated look that shows off its all-encompassing and spatially imposing scale. A light fixture over the platform provides a striking backdrop for the existing red-tiled pillars by putting the previously hidden dimensions of the space on display.

The renovation of the subway station includes the mezzanine level, where our principle of selectively reducing and complementing the structure’s existing features continues. In our design concept for this specific subway line, we have established guidelines for elements that were previously free-standing within the space, such as kiosks and ticket offices. They will remain in place, upgraded with more contemporary fittings and new storefronts. Red is the key accent color here, in a visual nod to the tiles on the platform-level pillars. To demonstrate our commitment to engaging with the existing architecture, we elevate these pillars to the key characteristic feature of the Gisela Strasse subway station. Introducing a uniform new ceiling system with an integrated lighting and acoustic system enhances the spatial experience, making the space brighter, calmer and more anxiety-free with welcoming, easy-access retail zones. As the subway remains in operation during construction, we have organized the renovations in separate, self-contained stages that each have pre-defined interim milestones.
