The architectural concept optimizes entry to and transfer between train platforms. It creates an urban space with its own identity at a critical interchange of major public transportation systems and the high-traffic center of Munich.
We condensed the existing layout from a vast and shapeless expanse into finite spaces, imposing order and creating self-explanatory, easily recognizable tectonic configurations. Dark and hidden recesses are eliminated; the mezzanine floor feels accessible and spacious. The color scheme and lighting design developed in collaboration with industrial designer Ingo Maurer give the space a strong identity. Lighting solutions designed specifically for the mezzanine floor coupled with the use of reflective materials on the ceilings and walls create a bright and airy atmosphere.
Making reference to the subway platforms built back in the 1970s, the lighting concept uses an orange-red hue as its main color. Today, the mezzanine floor of the Marienplatz subway station has become an unmistakable urban space with its own identity – one of vitality, strong footfall and unique flair.
