The project comprises a new residential and commercial building and the renovation and extension of a listed factory building in one site.
In an aim to give the new premises a unique expression, building materials are deployed in a way that breaks with the conventional structuring of a façade: the plasterwork on the plinth, upper floors and roof gradually becomes more finely grained towards the top. This subversion, essentially upending the traditional order, gives the project its unmistakable resonance – and yet this unique standalone building also provides a contextual reference to the neighborhood. The building plays with perceptions by putting something familiar in a new visual context. Directly next to the new build is a listed former factory from 1893. After a complete renovation of the building, a new superstructure made of steel and glass is added on the roof. The spacious loft spaces in the interior are characterized by cast-iron pillars, steel-vaulted ceilings and exposed brick walls. The design takes care to retain historic features and enhance them with modern materials and structures. References to both the past and present are recognizable in the architecture.
