The architectural design for the Aying Kindergarten is based on a keen awareness of the rural townscape and the existing school building, as well as an appreciation of traditional architecture in the region.

The kindergarten references local farm architecture characterized by longhouses with dominant pitched roofs, but provides its own creative interpretation. The pitch of the roof becomes a spatial feature, while also defining the façade and the four communal rooms on the upper floor. The wrap-around balcony provides the children with additional outdoor play space facing the garden. The multipurpose room and administration offices are positioned around the entrance hall on the ground floor. Large sections of the façade are clad in vertical timber beams, punctuated by windows framed in wide aluminum bands. The façade is connected in places with the roof overhang in a prominent break with the regional pitched roof principle.
