Through precise architectural interventions, one of the listed historic townhouses dating from 1834 in Munich’s old town was refurbished, extended and upgraded.

The attic was converted into a residential unit with a bright and spacious gallery level. In the reconfiguration of the floor plan, particular consideration was given to heritage conservation requirements relating to the structure and original configuration of the roof truss from 1912. A large proportion of the roof timber dating from before 1912 was able to be reused. In addition to a total of eight new dormers, a roof loggia was inserted into the rear side of the roof envelope.

The refurbishment of the staircase and the addition of an external lift significantly improved the circulation and accessibility throughout the building. Alongside numerous design interventions in the staircase, the plinth paintwork, plinth tiles and floor tiles were restored or renewed in coordination with the heritage conservation authorities.

To complete the refurbishment, extensive repair works were carried out on the rendered and stucco façade. Pre-weathered titanium zinc sheets on cornices, window sills and projections complement the heritage-sensitive restoration of the building envelope.
