The urban planning feature of the new secondary school lies in its exposed location on the outskirts of Königsbrunn. The new building allows for the construction of a school in a green setting with panoramic views in all directions. This special added value will be exploited through the optimal orientation of the classrooms. At the same time, the positioning of the new building will also give the surrounding open space a new significance. This will be taken into account and developed equally in the design process.
The proposed solution takes up the basic idea of the southern extension examined in the feasibility study. However, this is slightly offset from the existing building line, thus echoing the slight projections of the existing building volume. The offsets create differentiated outdoor spaces that can be used in different ways.
The existing school building on Römerallee, built in 2002, has a number of special features in terms of its typology, which will be identified, evaluated and optimised during the process. The aim is to develop a new building that enters into dialogue with the existing structure and complements it in a meaningful way. The existing building, with its clear grid and spacious rooms, offers great potential for conversion and further use. With only minor structural alterations, most of the specialist rooms and general areas for future school operations can be accommodated here.
The implementation of the educational concept with learning clusters (learning apartments) in a square basic form was examined during the planning process. Combining two learning apartments or year groups per floor is a functional and educationally sound solution. Areas that can be used for a variety of purposes, such as specialist rooms, differentiation rooms and team rooms, serve as connecting elements between the units.
The central element of this concept is the spatial centre – the so-called marketplace, which serves as a communal meeting place and venue for exchange. A radial arrangement of classrooms around this centre allows for equal orientation and lighting of all learning spaces.
This organisation strengthens the sense of community and promotes identification with the school. Cooperation, teamwork and self-learning skills are encouraged in an environment that conveys a sense of security and belonging. At the same time, a flexible architecture is created that allows for medium and long-term changes – for example, through adaptable room configurations, mobile walls or modular furniture.
The spacious open area in the south-west can be designed as a large playground that also accommodates new sports facilities. The lush greenery on the façade of the existing building is also reflected in the new building in the form of clustered green elements.
