The project area is an important building block in the “Berg am Laim” district in eastern Munich. Several public green areas are located in the surrounding area, which - including the new Campus East – merge into a superordinate green belt. In the park-like plot with old trees, the two new volumes are subtly implemented as open structures, which promotes networking between sports and school areas and the district as well as between the interiors of the new buildings and the surrounding greenery.
School
The school building fits into the existing green space as a ring-shaped, partly raised volume. The open structure embraces the carious classroom buildings along a circular access band around the common center - the central schoolyard within the ring.
Characteristics are the subtractions of the volume both in the horizontal and in the vertical. This results in a segmentation in several dimensions, allowing the different uses to be inserted and stacked in the ring-shaped building. While the secondary school is located in the south, the special needs school can train with a single sports hall located in the north.
The large format accommodates both types of schools which function separately and can be flexibly interconnected if required, so that synergy effects can be promoted.
The interlocking of interior and exterior spaces creates identity and creates areas with their own atmosphere and density for students at every level. In this way, the architectural concept consistently implements the pedagogical requirements, creates a place of identification and integration for the pupils, which awakens and strengthens the sense of community.
Sports campus
The building concept is characterized by the accommodation of different uses with their specific requirements. The stacking of functions such as swimming pool / daycare center and sports hall / club house generates a compact construction volume. In order to dissolve the large-format building shape, allow for additional exposure areas and strengthen the relationship between the school campus and outdoor sports areas, a building joint is formed om a west-east orientation, which becomes a three-dimensional meeting space by means of a cascade-like staircase on both sides.
Climate-friendly building
As a pilot project “Climate Neutral Building” of the LHM, both buildings will be executed in accordance with a maximum reduction of the CO2 footprint. A special focus is on a wood hybrid construction method, a combination of low and high-tech, the use of recyclable materials and a unique construction. Biodiversity is promoted by extensive greening of roofs and facades.
