This project demonstrates how a new architectural cornerstone can provide a visually prominent, structural entryway into an existing large-scale shopping complex. With its structural qualities, our design succeeds in grounding and invigorating the complex in the trade fair district of Munich-Riem.

Covering around 100,000 square meters in its current configuration, the expansion of the StadtQuartier Riem Arcaden adds another 18,500 square meters in usable space. The new building represents the final missing piece of the Neue-Mitte-Riem complex and completes the StadtQuartier district. In its external appearance, the complex establishes a well-proportioned, perfectly coordinated visual rhythm, which is not tied to the intended purpose of the units ranging from retail and office space to restaurants and a hotel. The façade resembles a curtain made of varying folded and perforated metal panels, providing this multi-purpose building with the uniformity it needs and placing the structure itself within the desired design context. A bright white cantilevered flying roof – supported by eight pairs of columns – extends over the parapets of the forward-facing buildings. This so-called portico defines the spatial boundary and gives the entire StadtQuartier development a unique character thanks to its sculptural and prominent impact.
