The former parcel post office on Arnulf Street was built in several stages in 1924 based on the designs of Robert Vorhölzer, Franz Holzhammer and Walther Schmidt. The world-renowned “Postpalast” ensemble with its rotunda has been reinvented for various uses and to host events of all kinds over the decades. It is currently being converted into a hotel and office complex.
Using the existing 1920s architecture as a basis, the design comprises the rebuilding, renovation and extension of the overall complex. Distinctive spatial structures from this era will be preserved in both the interior and the exterior of the buildings, returning them to their rightful place in accordance with their original function. Targeted yet subtle interventions will visibly enlarge the existing buildings and sensitively mix the old with the new. The design of the new-build façade and the additional story added to the pillar portico will reinterpret elements from the historical predecessor, offering a contemporary take on the “Neue Sachlichkeit” approach.
The hotel complex provides 286 rooms in the five-star luxury category with international travelers as the target audience. The reception and restaurant as well as space for the deli, lounge, club, conference and bar are found on the ground floor and on the newly added mezzanine level. The basement of the rotunda has been unused for decades and will be converted into an event space for 800 guests. A spa area with pool will be added to the existing premises. Additional office buildings will provide roughly 548 modern workstations, which can be adapted for various floorplans and a wide range of occupants. Completion of the complex as a whole is scheduled for 2021.
